Not sure whether your site or building needs an F01 Fire Guard or an F08 Fire Safety Director? You’re not alone. Understanding the difference is key to staying compliant with NYC Fire Code.
What Is an F01 Fire Guard?

- Where Required:Vacant buildings, construction sites, alarm/sprinkler outages
- Duties:Patrol for fire hazards, maintain logs, call 911 if needed
- Work Settings:Job sites, events, commercial buildings, film sets
What Is an F08 Fire Safety Director?
- Purpose:Supervise life safety systems and emergency response in high-rise buildings
- Where Required:Office buildings 100+ ft., hotels with 30+ rooms, some assembly spaces
- Duties:Coordinate evacuation procedures, communicate with FDNY, maintain compliance logs
- Work Settings:Class E buildings, hotels, major venues, corporate campuses
Certification & Responsibility
- F01 Certification:Easier to obtain, suited for fire watch tasks
- F08 Certification:Requires advanced training and testing, focused on emergency leadership
